Makers At The Mill is Kate, Holly, Rachel & Jo - four makers based in West Yorkshire, with a love of handmade processes. This year the lack of opportunities for artists & makers to participate in physical markets is impacting many creatives - for who markets are a great source of interaction, exchange & mutual support. So the idea arose to get together & create a small, physical market ourselves, which viewers could visit remotely online. After a year of so much isolation, we're looking forward to bringing you an online market - with the feel of an in-person event.

 

 Kate met Jo at an art market about 8 or 9 years ago and they became firm friends after some lengthy creative studio chats. Jo had previously studied at the Royal College of Art with Rachel and they both ended up in West Yorkshire, Jo back home and Rachel to Wakefield where she works from Westgate Studios - a fair few miles from her native Scotland. A place also very dear to Jo's heart as she has visited many of the countries islands and secretly, or not so secretly wishes she lived on one in blissful solitude. Jo took on a studio at Bates Mill which is where Kate works from and when Holly became another studio holder after Jo left, Kate and Holly were introduced through a mutual friend. Holly has recently returned to Huddersfield after living in New Zealand, somewhere Kate has also spent some time and feels an affinity with too.

 

So that's it.

 

At the moment we are supporting each other virtually in our work and businesses. We can't wait to actually be in the same room and share our work with you from the amazing space within Bates Mill!
